The History Department of Uluberia College was established from the date of its very foundation in 1948 offering General Course initially. The Honours course was launched in 1962. Since then, the UG programme is being offered on the basis of the syllabus ,set by the Calcutta University.
At present, the department is run by one Associate Professor, Dr. Jayashree Sarkar, M.A., M.Phil, Ph.D and three Assistant Professors Smt. Dalia Hazra, M.A. (regd. for Ph.D) ,Dr.Mahuya Mukherjee, M.A. Ph.D, Sri Bidhan Chandra Sen, M.A., along with three permanent part-time teachers, Sajahan Ali Khan M.A. , Sirajuddin Mullick M.A. (double) and Sk. Matiaruddin Ahmed M.A. and four Guest Lecturers. These eleven teachers make a community of devoted and hard-working lot who are trying their utmost for an all-round improvement of student’s learning process and various other activities of the department such as Seminars , Quiz, debates, Wall Magazine “Itihaser Alokey”, Picnic, Teacher’s Day celebration, farewell of outgoing students and such others involving the students. Besides delivering lectures, the students are furnished with lists of Reference books, often provided with and are encouraged to interact with teachers as well as fellow students about the thrusts of these books, difficulties faced ,raise questions and to make rational enquiry. The need of the students are met by a well-equipped library, books purchased from the lists prepared by the department. The aim of the teachers is to make the students proactive, inquisitive and dynamic besides preparing the young minds to face the challenges of the present world scenario. Student Councelling is a regular activity. Question-answer sessions and tests are methods adopted for evaluating the students.
The Honours and General courses are in high demand. Every year, the College receives a huge number of applications from students, aspiring to enroll themselves in Honours and General courses. Every year , the number shows a steady increase. Many students from financially – depressed families receive financial assistance from college and other agencies.
Usually most of the passed-out students opt for Post Graduate courses under Calcutta University as well as other Universities. An appreciable number are selected as teachers in schools and colleges after successfully clearing selection tests. Some even pursue Doctorate degrees.

The teachers of this department are actively involved in coordinating various activities of the college like internal as well as University examinations, admission, involvement in internal quality assessment and such others. For the last five years, the History department has been one of the Zonal Centres for Part I History General Examination of Calcutta University with Dr. Jayashree Sarkar and Smt. Dalia Hazra being the Head-Examiners respectively.
The departmental teachers have been selected as Head Examiners in different University Examinations.Dr. Mahuya Mukherjee is in charge of Kanyashree Prakalapa(Govt. of West Bengal) and is actively involved in successful running of this scheme.
